You have invested hundreds if not thousands of dollars into the suspension of your BMW. But without a skid plate your oil pan now sits dangerously close to the ground.
A skid plate gives you the piece of mind to drive around at the lowest of ride heights. Not to mention preventing hundreds if not thousands of possible engine damage.
Warning:
Skid plates will NOT make your oil pan indestructible. If after installation your skid plate is constantly scraping and hitting things during your normal routine, your car is too low!
Periodically check to make sure that you don't have any rocks or debris between your oil pan and skid plate. Even the smallest rock can get shoved into the oil pan during a small impact.

Fitment Notes:
- The E30 has two sets of mounting holes for the steering rack. You must have yours mounted in the standard position, the holes closest to the crossmember. The holes farthest from the crossmember were only used for cars that were not originally equipped with power steering, the U.S. never got any true manual steering cars. If your car has a steering rack out of a newer car (E36, Z3, E46, etc...) the installer may have used the wrong holes which will shift the skid plate too far forward. This doesn't happen very often and is easily corrected.
- In most situations there is adequate clearance for most non-stock steering racks (E36, Z3, E46, etc...) but it may be necessary to "clearance" the skid plate to fit around the larger steering rack. Again, this is very uncommon.
